    Equivalent modelling of reciprocating engines generators for microgrid frequency response analysis

    Typical microgrid configurations include small-scale generation units that belong to the class of reciprocating engines (gas, diesel, heavy fuel oil). A simplified equivalent model for representing the frequency response of a given set of this kind of generators is proposed in this paper. The model parameters are tuned to obtain frequency responses compliant with the performance classes stated by the ISO 8528-5 standard. The result is a set of equivalent and simple models that can be used to simulate the frequency response within a given microgrid configuration that includes a set of reciprocating engines generators. Finally, a suitable validation of the proposed models is carried out using two highly detailed models of real diesel and heavy fuel oil generators

    Distribution Level Aggregator Platform for DSO Support—Integration of Storage, Demand Response, and Renewables

    Modern era is full of renewable energy resources, particularly wind and solar that are installed at both Low and Medium voltage nodes of the distribution system. With the diffusion of new resources in the distribution grid, a new challenge for the system operators is to cope up with the introduced changes in the distribution network. These changes can be on voltage levels, magnitudes and direction of current, and changes in power factor. The reduced visibility of these additives to operators require provision of ancillary services to ensure power system reliability and stability. In order to give flexibility to operator, and in particular DSO for distribution grid, the paper suggests the use of distribution level aggregators to serve as sub-DSO (JDSO). These aggregators utilize the three main components: Electrical energy storage system, customers demand response, and the renewable resources (PV and wind). These aggregators utilize a platform where all these actors can participate. DSO-JDSOs interaction is possible through the platform, and the local problems at distribution can be resolved before it goes to TSO.     Optimal Management of a Smart Port with Shore-Connection and Hydrogen Supplying by Stochastic Model Predictive Control

    The paper proposes an optimal management strategy for a Smart Port equipped with renewable generation and composed by an electrified quay, operating Cold-Ironing, and a Hydrogen-based quay, supplying Zero-Emission Ships. One Battery Energy Storage System and one Hydrogen Energy Storage System are used to manage renewable energy sources and to supply electric and hydrogen-fueled ships. A model predictive control based algorithm is designed to define the best economic strategy to be followed during operations. The control algorithm takes into account the uncertainties of renewable energy generation using stochastic optimization. The performance of the approach is tested on a potential future Smart Port equipped with wind and photovoltaic generation

    Risk-based dynamic security assessment for power system operation & operational planning

    open6noAssessment of dynamic stability in a modern power system (PS) is becoming a stringent requirement both in operational planning and in on-line operation, due to the increasingly complex dynamics of a PS. Further, growing uncertainties in forecast state and in the response to disturbances suggests the adoption of risk-based approaches in Dynamic Security Assessment (DSA). The present paper describes a probabilistic risk-based DSA, which provides instability risk indicators by combining an innovative probabilistic hazard/vulnerability analysis with the assessment of contingency impacts via time domain simulation. The tool implementing the method can be applied to both current and forecast PS states, the latter characterized in terms of renewable and load forecast uncertainties, providing valuable results for operation and operational planning contexts.     Quantification of Primary Frequency Control Provision from Battery Energy Storage Systems Connected to Active Distribution Networks

    In this paper, we consider the provision of primary frequency control by using battery energy storage systems (BESSs). In particular, we use a standard droop-based frequency control for a BESS where the control action (i.e. the BESS power output) consists in the contribution of two additive terms: the regulating power, proportional to the frequency deviations, and an offset term computed to manage the BESS State-of-Energy (SOE). In the context of such a control scheme, we propose a method to forecast the BESS energy for regulation needs and we show that the inclusion of such a forecast can increase the regulating power provision. Finally, we demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach by means of a real-scale experimental setup composed by a grid-connected 720 kVA/560 kWh BESS installed at the EPFL campus in Lausanne, Switzerland

    Probabilistic assessment of Net Transfer Capacity considering forecast uncertainties

    In transmission system planning, researchers propose methods to assess the effect of uncertainties of power system operating condition due to forecasting errors of intermittent generation and loads. In particular probabilistic power flow methods are used to calculate the probability distributions of the voltages and the branch currents, starting from the distributions of power injections/absorptions. These uncertainties play a key role in the operational planning of power systems, as certain configurations of load and intermittent generation can cause security problems. This paper aims to propose a probabilistic methodology to assess Net Transfer Capacity (NTC) among network areas, which quantifies forecast error uncertainties by applying the Point Estimate Method (PEM) combined with Third Order Polynomial Normal (TPN) Transformation. This approach is compared with a conventional NTC assessment technique and has been tested on an IEEE test system

    A serious game architecture for green mobility

    Good driving behavior is a significant factor for road safety and green mobility. A countermeasure to overcome the coarse driving behavior and a methodology to captivate optimal driving traits are discussed in this work. For which, the serious games concept was exploited to improvise the driver performance by deploying diversified game logics (scores, incentives and live game for performance evolution) on a smartphone-based user interface. The application was tested in ASTA ZERO (Active Safety Test Area) in Sweden. The tests comprised of variations (good and bad driving behavior) in driving pattern for analyzing the impact of the application on the driver performance

    Microenvironmental regulation of the IL-23R/IL-23 axis overrides chronic lymphocytic leukemia indolence

    Although the progression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) requires the cooperation of the microenvironment, the exact cellular and molecular mechanisms involved are still unclear. We investigated the interleukin (IL)-23 receptor (IL-23R)/IL-23 axis and found that circulating cells from early-stage CLL patients with shorter time-to-treatment, but not of those with a more benign course, expressed a defective form of the IL-23R complex lacking the IL-12R beta 1 chain. However, cells from both patient groups expressed the complete IL-23R complex in tissue infiltrates and could be induced to express the IL-12R. 1 chain when cocultured with activated T cells or CD40L(+) cells. CLL cells activated in vitro in this context produced IL-23, a finding that, together with the presence of IL-23 in CLL lymphoid tissues, suggests the existence of an autocrine/paracrine loop inducing CLL cell proliferation. Interference with the IL-23R/IL-23 axis using an anti-IL-23p19 antibody proved effective in controlling disease onset and expansion in xenografted mice, suggesting potential therapeutic strategies
